In Matthew 11, it reads
When John heard in prison what Christ was doing, he sent his disciples to ask him, "Are you the one who was to come, or should we expect someone else?" (Matthew 11:2-3)
It seems that John did not know who Jesus is. However,
1. John's mother and Jesus' mother were relatives.
2. John was the one who baptized Jesus.
Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. But John tried to deter him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?" (Matthew 3:13-14)
How should we interpret the seemingly contradicting passages?

Google: "Are you the one who was to come". Then click "I'm feeling lucky". Some quote from that article: "Possibly being in prison made him wonder about what he had been so certain of before. I would expect that being put in jail was not one of the things he had anticipated." Mmm ... Does God create google to help finding Bible answer?

Felix, since I cannot point to much
scriptural evidence to support my
stance, my stance is just an
opinion. I think our dear J.T.B. was
one of us who expected a different
kind of Messiah. I think John
expected a Davidic King. John sensed
- I believe - that Jesus is the
Christ but could not grasp the idea
of a 'suffering servant'. Maybe
J.T.B., Dan Brown ("Davinci Code"),
myself and others have something in
common when we want to remake Jesus
in our own image. Jesus the Christ - and thereby Christianity - is
necessarily associated with
servanthood and crucifixion. Is such
an association any more popular today than in 1st century Palestine?
