singing

When we sing a song in church, quite often the music lead asks people to sing like this:
- girls sing 1st part
- guys sing 2nd part
- then sing together

Any particular reason we like to do this so often? I think of a few:

1. let people to catch a breath
2. so we know how bad guy can sing
3. more variety
4. Bible teach us to do so !?

Is this really the general case?
Cos... I haven't experienced this in any churches i've attended before... ^^||

It might be more common for smaller churches, where you know the song leader in most cases.

My church likes to do that ... another question I have is. The music lead often like to move one hand, to show the rhythm/notes I think. I just wonder if he/she really shows the correct notes. Or just randomly move the hand?

It really depends on who is the presider on that Sunday. Your mileage might varied.
